‘The Lab helped during my final draft’

Gitanjali Rao, whose animation film Bombay Rose is at Screenwriters Lab, chats about her film and her experience at Film Bazaar:

On NFDC Film Bazaar
This is my second visit to NFDC Film Bazaar. I had never thought of attending before because I make animation films. But, one day, I was talking to a friend from FTII and she suggested that I send my script to NFDC’s Screenwriters’ Lab. I did and I was selected. I was shocked since mine was an animation film.

How it helped
The Lab helped a lot because I was at a point in the script where I couldn’t go further without getting feedback. So it helped a great deal while I was finishing the final draft.

Getting a producer
I already had French producer but I didn’t have an Indian producer on board. In the Film Bazaar Lab, they develop a script and then look for producers. But since I already had a producer, they changed the rules.

On her film
My film Bombay Rose is a young love story. It is about a 19-year-old boy who sells flowers and falls in love with a girl who sells gajras. Every day, he gives her a rose, which he has taken from a graveyard. There is also another parallel story, one that concerns the rose… who puts that rose in the graveyard every day?

On Indian animation industry
Whenever an animation film works, we feel very happy. I hope things change one day.
