“I Always Stay True To The Script”

kausarKausar Munir talks about Begum Jaan and the songs she did for the upcoming film, Meri Pyaari Bindu, in an interview to Sayali Parab

This musical prodigy wears many hats, not least of which are lyricist, screen writer and poet. She made her mark in Bollywood by penning soulful songs like Pareshaan from Ishaqzaade and Suno na sangemarmar from Youngistaan. Recently, the multi-faceted Kausar Munir wrote the screenplay and lyrics for Begum Jaan and also penned lyrics for the upcoming film Meri Pyaari Bindu.

While Munir believes in staying true to the script, for Begum Jaan, she did watch the original Bengali film Rajkahini before writing the dialogue and lyrics. Talking about her working style, she says, “It’s a fictional story. The script is the research and what the director needs becomes the template. I consider the vision of the director. Only they look at the larger version of the picture. We are just playing a part on that larger story. It’s always a good idea to stick to the director and storyteller’s vision.”

Saying that it always pays to stay true to the content, she remarks, “I stay true to the script and write keeping in mind what the situation demands, what the director wants and also what suits the music. That’s how I work. The background may be old or the era maybe vintage but the dilemma we face is still the same… caste, religion and politics. So it’s absolutely contemporary and relevant.”

On her association with Anu Malik on Begum Jaan, Munir reveals, “Anu Malik is proficient and prolific. He comes up with a lot of stuff even before you complete your thought. I got a lot of music inputs from him while working.”

Munir doesn’t part with much while talking about the songs of Meri Pyaari Bindu but she does say that it’s a musical film. “In this film, music plays an important part in storytelling. It has a mix of old and new music. The old and exiting songs are part of scripting and background while the new songs show the state of mind of the characters and their journey with each other. Maana ke hum yaar nahin is incidentally a poem I had written some time ago. This poem suits the emotion and the mental state of the character. I am so glad that Yash Raj Films locked the song. This is an example of how poetry came first and the rest later.”

Kusar Munir’s next project is Secret Superstar starring Amir Khan.
