AN EMOTIONAL DEBUT

Arpita Mukherjee (26)Playback singer Arpita Mukherjee, who got a big break in the film Mubarakan, has lent her voice to a heartfelt song Haathon mein thhe haath in the film. Mukherjee, in a candid chat with Komal Sharma, shares her journey to Bollywood

Arpita Mukherjee says the song Haathon mein thhe haath is a beautiful and very emotional song. “It’s a very sentimental track. The lyrics are very deep and that really stands out in the song. The track is getting so much of love and hits from listeners,” says the debutant.

Mukherjee reveals that to get the correct tone, the first step is to understand the mood of the song. “Sometimes, we singers don’t know whom we are singing for till the song releases. We don’t know which actors will feature in the song. So we need to comprehend what the music director’s vision is and the overall tone of the song. Once you get that right, you can sing your heart out.”

Asked about the recording session, she says, “I have sung the song in Punjabi and I am actually a Bengali. While recording, I just went with the feel of the song. They gave me a brief, saying this is a very emotive song. It is the feeling when you miss your loved one, that feeling and emotion was required to be put into the song. So I got into that mood and sang.”

Mubarakan is a family kind of film made with a lot of heart. Talking about Team Mubarakan visiting a reality show for their film promotions, Mukherjee says, “Anil Kapoorji and Arjun Kapoor came to promote this film at a reality show, where I was one of the jury members. We had a great time there. It’s also a film you can connect with easily and it’s very light-hearted. It is the kind of film you can watch with your family.”

On working with music directors Gourov-Roshin, who are her long-time friends too. “I had worked with them for a Y- Films web series. We have worked together on many jingles and a lot of television songs too. That’s how we know each other. For this particular song, Kumaar paaji (lyricist) heard my voice and he, along with Gourov-Roshin, thought my voice was perfect for this particular song. That’s how I bagged this project,” she reveals.

Mukherjee also speaks of how she has evolved from a reality show contestant to a professional singer. “My journey started with a talent hunt. I was the winner on a singing reality show and that’s where I started my career. I have faced many challenges but the good thing is I never stopped working and this is my first film but I have also been doing a lot of other work in the industry. Every recording has taught me something new and I am happy to be where I am,” she says.

Before signing off, Mukherjee talks about the challenges every artiste faces. “As artistes, we try to carve a niche for ourselves. But one needs the right break at the right time. It’s about being in the right place at the right time. The biggest challenge every artiste is facing in the industry is to reach a certain level and to maintain that place. For that, you need to keep doing good music and giving it your best shoot all the time,” she concludes.
