CAIRO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The 39th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) will take place from November 21 to November 30, 2017. Egypt has enjoyed a strong cinematic tradition since the art of filmmaking first developed over a century ago. In fact, Egypt is famously called ‘Hollywood of the East’ in the Arab World, for its long filmmaking history. It is the only international competitive feature film festival recognised by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF) in the Arab world and Africa, as well as the oldest in this category.

INDIAN CONNECT
Agam
Directed by Sumit Mishra, Agam is set against the backdrop of Banaras, the city of Shiv, corpses and tantra. It explores how the lives of three people get entwined – a man in his quest for truth having broken the shackles of the Hindu monastery; a newlywed women in a house that overlooks funeral pyres trying to cope with the foul stench and sights; and an austere ascetic or tantrik who is on the path to penultimate supremacy, but puts everything at stake for the sake of love and lust.

Opening Night
The Mountain Between Us
Directed by Hany Abu-Assad, the film is about a tragic plane crash, where two stranded strangers forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow-covered mountain. When they realise that help is not coming, they embark on a perilous journey across hundreds of miles of wilderness, pushing one another to endure and discover strength they didn’t know was even possible.
