“I can’t see myself being just a voice”

IMG_1979Prakriti Kakar tells Sayali Parab why she clicked so easily with her latest song Hai zaroori and reveals her dream to feature in her own tracks

She’s back with her latest song — Hai zaroori from Noor – and with this track, Prakriti Kakar yet again wows with a mellow rendition. Kakar says the song was locked in one go, “We were supposed to do a scratch back then. Since we were vibing with the song and the audio was actually retained, we recorded the song. We played it for the producers, they liked it and the song was locked. So, a random session turned out to be the final song.”

The singer explains the context of the song in the film. “It’s a very hopeful song picturised on Sonakshi (Sinha). She is going through a breakdown. She has had a break-up and things are not all right in her career either. The lyrics, Ke chori chori chupke se chupke se rona, hai zaroori. Ke paani paani ankhiyon ka ankhiyon ka hona hai zaroori means that even if your day is bad, it doesn’t mean your life is bad. It’s okay to cry and vent since it makes one feel better.”

This song left even Kakar teary-eyed. “This song means more to me than any other song I have ever sung as the lyrics reflect my feelings. I was not happy and was also going through something like a break-up personally, and that’s why it clicked. I didn’t have to pretend while singing. You need to be an actress behind the mic, and you have to feel the situation. So this song came naturally to me as I was in that space already. While recording, I was teary-eyed behind the mic and there were times when I had to hide my face. I was in the moment and it channelised all my feelings. I think it’s liberating for an artiste to do that.”

About competition in the industry, the singer remarks, “I think every singer will agree with me when I say that consistency is not something we can control. This year looks great for me since I have a lot of songs coming up.”

Kakar is looking forward to being more than just a playback singer. “Five years down the line, I cannot see myself being just a voice. Nowadays, it’s not only about your voice but also your personality and face value. I want to feature in my own songs.”
