What’s It All About?

The Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) will enter its 41st edition this year. The Cleveland Film Society, founders of the festival, promotes artistically and culturally significant film arts through education and exhibition to enrich the life of the community. The mission is to set high standards for quality film education and exhibition, placing artistic and cultural merit above commercial appeal. The festival will showcase 202 feature films and 216 short films, representing 71 countries during its 12-day run.

California Typewriter
Directed by Doug Nichol, California Typewriter documents the struggles of California Typewriter, one of the last standing repair shops in America dedicated to keeping the ageing machines in working order. Featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer, David McCullough and Sam Shepard, this film will leave you looking at your own relationship with technology.

Lipstick Under My Burkha
Alankrita Shrivastava’s directorial Lipstick Under My Burkha is set in rural India. The plot revolves around four women trapped in different worlds and who live out their desires through secret acts of rebellion. Trapped in a conservative society, these women break the mould and go in search of a little freedom. The film features Konkona Sensharma, Ratna Pathak and Aahana Kumra.

 Half Ticket
Half Ticket is the story of two brothers living in poverty and their absolute focus to get what they cannot dare to dream of. The boys collect coal from the railway tracks but they have an obsession to own a restaurant that they come across. The restaurant turns them away as ‘slum rats’ and one brother is beaten. When the video of this goes viral, the boys suddenly find themselves at the centre of national attention. The film has been directed by Samit Kakkad and features Shubham More, Vinayak Potdar, Priyanka Bose, Bhau Kadam and Usha Naik.

 Psycho Raman
The film is about a serial killer, Raman Ragav, who terrorised Mumbai in the 1960s. A dark and grimy saga follows Raman, a killer born in the slums, as he roams the streets of present-day Mumbai with his trusty car jack looking for prey. Raman believes he has found his alter ego in a policeman called Raghavan and starts to obsess about getting him to reveal his darker side. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal in the lead roles.

 Schirkoa
Ishan Shukla’s Schirkoa is an animated film. In a city of Bag-heads, a Senate member faces a tough choice between a political career, brothels and love for a mysterious woman. It is a choice that will transform his life and the city in unimaginable ways.

 The School Bag
The School Bag is a drama about surprises we plan and ones we can’t even imagine. The film is a tale about Farooq and his mother that will make you question the world we live in.

Waterbaby
The arrival of a new girl forces shy, 11-year-old Melvin to face his fear of water head-on. A mysterious drawing book, a water-controlling superhero and an unlikely pet accompany him on a little journey of courage. Directed by Pia Shah, the film features Viraj Khemani, Gracy Singh, Pravishi Das, Suhaas Ahuja and Chitra Palekar.

The Hero

Faced with a cancer diagnosis, Lee’s priorities are refocused, causing him to assess the life he has led. With a star-studded cast including Nick Offerman, Laura Prepon and Krysten Ritter, The Hero addresses the question most people face at one time or another: what kind of legacy will I leave? The film is directed by Brett Haley.
