Just as she did with the first installment, Vidya Balan arrived for the trailer launch of her upcoming film in character. Only, this time, it was the handbag-toting Durga Rani Singh, the protagonist of Kahaani 2, accompanied by the police. Also present at the trailer launch, held at a suburban multiplex in Mumbai, were director Sujoy Ghosh, and producer Jayantilal Gada and his sons. Here’s what happened at the event:
Vidya Balan on her attire
I travelled by rickshaw and thankfully my rickshawallah didn’t recognise me. I am receiving a fabulous response to the look and everyone is messaging me. It feels great!
Sujoy Ghosh on the title
When we decided to make this film, we thought we would give it an identity; it would be a franchise but we would use a new name. To be honest, we all loved the name ‘Durga Rani Singh’ and that’s why we chose to use it. Every film has its own identity.
Vidya on the sequel
When Sujoy and I decided to work on Kahaani 2, we were very clear that we would not carry the baggage of the earlier one; we would work on a fresh story and create a new world. Once you look back at a successful film, you get distracted and that’s why we decided not to look back to the first part.
Sujoy on the sequel
The idea was to use a fresh story. So, if part one had Bob Biswas, you will not find this character in the second one, which has new characters. We decided not to get attached to anything from the first one.
Vidya on women-oriented films
I didn’t start the trend of women-centric films; I just happened to bag two films that had brilliant scripts. So credit goes to the writers, like Sujoy Ghosh, Rajat Arora and Milan Luthria. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Vidya on being called ‘Lady Aamir Khan’
If my films do the kind of box-office business that Aamir’s films do, I will accept that I am a ‘female Aamir Khan’. It’s a huge compliment but it’s far from the truth. Aamir has been working for a long time and has done a lot of films. He is also a marketing guru. I have never worked with him.
