Guess Who?

As we all know, ours is a highly personal business and, more than anything else, it is the personal relationships one nurtures – both as individuals as also organisations – that counts in the long run. By that yardstick, this studio is certainly on a self-destructive spree, even though they can hardly afford it, given their abysmal track record at the box office.
The studio has already messed up many of their earlier partnerships and their latest self-goal was their recent release, which featured a top actor who was also producing the film. While the production was a breeze for the producer/actor, the real nightmare began when it was time for the studio to take over the marketing and release responsibilities.
Not only did the studio refuse to properly back the film, polite inquiries from the producer/actor about the marketing and promotional plans were met with downright rude responses. While the studio’s reluctance to share plans could possibly have been excused if they had a phenomenal track record on the marketing front, the fact is that this has always been their weakest suit, and understandably, the actor – who after all was a stakeholder in the financial prospects of the film – was quite concerned.
Things came to such a pass that ultimately the producer/actor just gave up on seeing any action from the studio and swore to never work with them again, despite having a pretty impressive line-up of projects in the pipeline. Not surprisingly, some of these projects were quickly snapped up by other backers when they could have remained with the studio, had they just exercised common human courtesy.
Well, as they say, some folks don’t need enemies to pull them down… they are quite adept at doing it themselves!
