“The Industry Needs To Create Original Songs”

kumar-copyLyricist Kumaar talks about his latest song Saara zamana from Kaabil featuring Urvashi Rautela and speaks his mind on remakes

The groovy track Haseeno ka deewana from Kaabil has finally released and it is clear that the revamped song gives a completely fresh feel to the original version featuring Amitabh Bachchan in the film Yaarana. Lyricist Kumaar was approached by producer Sanjay Gupta as well as music directors Gourav-Roshan to revamp the song.

Saara zamana is a very popular song and I simply treated it as a tribute and tried to make it nice. It’s a legendary song and I have only added a few add-ons. Also, Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Gupta and others had approved the song. There were a few minor changes in the first draft that I had written but obviously, in the end, it was approved. Payal Dev has sung the song very well and the video is too good,” says Kumaar.

The song writer says that taking up a project that involves the recreation of a song always puts him in a quandary. “But if I don’t do it, somebody else will. I don’t really like refurbishing an old song but I have to go with the flow. We worked very well as a team for this song. The reviews are positive, people love the video and music. Personally, I too liked the song.”

Despite his reservations about remaking old tracks, Kumaar recently worked on two such songs in Wajah Tum Ho – Mahi ve and Dil mein chupa lunga. In a rather strong statement, he remarks, “Frankly I hope the trend of recreating songs ends soon. We have great talent in the industry and the original songs are already very popular. I believe that this trend should end and we should get back to basics. The industry needs to create original songs.”
