Jonita Gandhi : “It’s a treat to work with Rahman sir!”

In her successful journey from YouTube to Bollywood, singer Jonita Gandhi has crooned hits such as The breakup song from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the Pink anthem, Sau tarah ke from Dishoom and now her latest track, Raakh baakhi from MOM. In an interview with Komal Sharma she talks about the song and her experience of working with AR Rahman

Jonita Gandhi is happy and amazed at the same time to hear her voice in the album of MOM. After all, the vocalist was clueless that her song would become a part of the film. “I was called to Rahman sir’s studio to sing for the background score of MOM. But I didn’t know my version would actually get selected. So it was a pleasant surprise for me,” she says excitedly.

Talking about the song and its importance in the film, Gandhi explains, “As far as I know, the song highlights the emotions that drive a very intense scene in the film. I love the intensity of the song. It’s a unique song that haunts you.”

Since the corresponding scenes were already shot, Gandhi referred to the video during the recording. “It definitely helped me express while singing the Hindi lines. Sridevi ma’am’s acting and expressions for this scene were so powerful that they inspired the intensity of the song. I haven’t seen the whole film, but I feel the song complements the scene. Rahman sir has created the perfect music for the situation, and I’m so glad to be part of it!”

Interestingly, while most songs in MOM are in Hindi, Raakh baakhi has a mix of Hindi and English. According to Gandhi, “Raakh Baakhi has one portion in English, which is sung beautifully by a singer friend of mine, Rianjali. The background screams that are scattered throughout the track are actually my voice. It was quite difficult to scream like that in a studio in front of Rahman sir. But it was definitely a memorable experience.”

Sharing her experience of working with the music maestro, she says, “It is always a treat to work with Rahman sir. I always learn new things about my voice when I work with him. In this song, I had to do a lot of talking and shouting – both of which are new to me – along with singing. But Rahman sir step-by-step showed me how to deliver the lines.”

The songster is grateful to her listeners, who have liked her new song. “My fans have always supported me and in spite of being out of the country most of the time, I still get love and respect from them,” she says humbly.

Currently Gandhi is working for her YouTube channel, and recording for some upcoming collaborations and Bollywood songs.
