Daler Mehndi, who has crooned the title track of Mirzya, was offered the song during the making of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. “I asked Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra to tell me once they start working on the songs. After the music was composed, Mehra called me to sing it,” Mehndi says.
“I came to Mumbai for the recording and heard the music composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. I was very happy with the music and the lyrics written by Gulzar Saab. When I was leaving the studio, I told them about my wish to sing the line, ‘O mirzya,’ The moment I sang it, everybody had tears in their eyes. Gulzar Saab said, ‘Yeh hai Mirzya; isse kehte hai Mirzya’. This is how it all started.”
Mehndi practiced the shers written by Gulzar for the next two to three months. “The shers will run through the entire film,” he says. “Being a Punjabi singer, I am very aware of how Mirzya is sung in every house and village as a story. I wanted to be a part of this film since it’s about true lovers Mirzya-Sahiban. We have sung the title track in pure Punjabi fashion. It is written by Gulzar Saab in Urdu. The style of the song is exactly like a 500-year-old Mirzya. However, the other songs have a Rajathani flavour.”
Mehndi says it was an impromptu decision to compose spontaneously. “I have written a few shers, which are again pure Punjabi and will appear in the title track. I had not planned it; it was a spontaneous idea. There is soul and junoon in this song,” he adds.
He says the title track is being spoken about in the industry for having an Indian feel and a classical touch. “The title track is a hit and people are loving it. This is the first title track in India in five or six years that features purely Indian music. The other songs released around the same time as Mirzya have got some negative comments too, but comments for Mirzya have been only positive.”
Mehndi has also been roped in for the title track of Dangal, which is as pure and energetic as Mirzya, he says. “The Dangal title track is very motivating. If a person has given up on things and hears the track, he will be motivated to do just about anything in life. It’s that great. Amitabh Bhattacharya has penned inspiring lyrics for it.”
Apart from Dangal and Mirzya, Mehndi is working with his brother Mikha Singh on a single. “I have also sung the title for Bahubali 2, in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Signing for Bahubali 2 was another level of fun and a unique experience,” Mehndi observes.
