Let’s Party!

DSC_0090 Jaslee (2)Singer-composer Jasleen Royal talks about her latest song What’s up from Phillauri

Jasleen Royal virtually strolled into Bollywood with Preet from Khoobsurat. She established herself with a handful of super-hit songs including Badla badla from Badlapur, Kho gaye hum kahan and Nachde ne saare from Baar Baar Dekho and Raatein from Shivaay. Royal is back with another wedding song, What’s up from Phillauri.

She says the call came at 2 am, and Saurabh Malhotra, HOD of Clean Slate Productions, was at the other end of the line. Well, we all know how that conversation ended! Royal says she was initially supposed to work on one music track but ended up working on two tracks for Phillauri.

What’s up is a high-energy wedding song, which embraces the craziness and revelry of a Punjabi wedding. On working on the music, Royal says, “What’s up required an old-era vibe in certain segments. The song demanded the flavour of old Punjab as well as a contemporary touch. It is not a typical Punjabi wedding song, so one had to keep many things in mind while making the music for it. I just went with the flow and presented what came naturally to me.”

She says that since she hails from Punjab, she is no stranger to folk music. “Mika Singh took care of the party segment in the song. He brought so much energy to it and automatically elevated the song,” she says.

The songstress has also lent her voice to What’s up. Royal says it was an impromptu decision by the makers.  “It was never planned that I would sing a song whose music I had composed. I was initially not meant to sing for Baar Baar Dekho and Shivaay either. We had dubbed Mika Singh’s voice and since people told me that my voice gelled very well with his, I dubbed for this song. It was not planned.”

Royal doesn’t elaborate on the second track she did for the film and only says, “What’s up is a crazy, party-type song, while the other track, Din shagna da, is a very soothing, emotional song and a romantic number.”

Always cautious about the songs she works on, Royal says that when she shifted to Mumbai, she felt the urge to work with big banners. “I actually visited Dharma Productions quite a few times and they finally agreed to work with me. It’s also the kind of music you make, it should be attractive. So it’s a natural journey and I have got to work with good banners.”

Royal has been experimenting lately and learning different genres of music. “Right now, I am working on Punjabi, Rajasthani songs, pop music. It is challenging to work on various genres but I love the learning process. It is also giving me great exposure.”
