Locarno International Film Festival

IRRFANKHAN1August 2 to August 12, 2017,

Locarno, Switzerland

What’s It All About?

Every August, for 11 days, the Swiss-Italian town of Locarno becomes the world capital of auteur cinema. At the Locarno film festival, rich, eclectic, surprising and emerging talent get a unique chance to be at par with prominent guests. Locarno is a unique launch platform for new films from all over the world, precisely because of its enormous and multi-cultural audience.

The Lacarno film festival is synonymous with discovery and innovation. Also, it pays special attention to developments in contemporary cinema in a constant hunt for the most innovative productions of the moment. It screens films from studio blockbusters to Indies, from genre films to experimental cinema, and the best documentaries and shorts.

In its 70th edition it complements its cinephile-oriented sections with another one exclusively designed for wider audiences – the Piazza Grande, where 16 features screen outdoors for an audience of 8,000 people. But rather than simply showcasing the same summer blockbusters that have dominated the box office, the Piazza features international films that are well suited to please the massive crowd.
