pb__5663-a-aSinger Tulsi Kumar shares her views on remaking old songs and her romantic tracks in Wajah Tum Ho

Tulsi Kumar, who recently lent her soulful voice to some of the songs in Wajah Tum Ho, says she was approached by Mithoon (Sharma) particularly for the title track. “He sent me a scratch of the song and wanted me to give it a try. Once I dubbed the song, Mithoon was convinced with the way I delivered it. That’s how this track happened.”

The singer bagged two more romantic tracks in the film – Dil mein chhupa lunga and Pal pal dil ke paas, both of them recreations of old songs. Tusli Kumar says she has experimented with her vocals in Dil mein chhupa lunga. “Meet Brothers helped me a lot during the recording. It was very important that I delivered the correct expression as this was one of the sensuously romantic songs in the film. It’s in a lower key and has a husky texture. On the other hand, for the third track, Pal pal dil ke paas, Abhijit Vaghani wanted me to be a part of this contemporary romantic recreation along with Arijit Singh.”

On the brief given to her, she says, “All these songs are of different moods and flavours even though all three of them revolve around romance. Romance is predominantly present in all the three songs and I was briefed on the expressions, moods and situations of each song by Vishal (director Vishal Pandya) and by the music composers.”

Dil mein chhupa lunga and Pal pal dil ke paas were originally sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar and Tusli says there is no escaping comparisons with the old songs. According to her, recreated tracks are doing well in the industry and have thus become a trend. “It is obvious when such songs are recreated that there would be comparisons. One has lived with these songs for so many years and the voice and everything has become a part of our system. But there is no way one can compare a remake with the legends. In today’s times, these songs are recreated in contemporary style. The female element is added to make it a duet, suiting the movie and its situational requirements. I think these songs have their own, special charm and are making their way to listeners’ playlists.”

Tulsi is naturally ecstatic about the songs becoming hits. “The biggest compliment came from Vishal Pandya. He called me to tell me that no one could have rendered them like I had and that it suited his film and the heroine. That meant a lot to me. Of course, my fans and listeners also love the title track Wajah tum ho and it has already crossed 14 million views on YouTube. Aise na mujhe tum dekho and Dil ke paas are recreations of such tremendously hit numbers. It goes without saying that these two songs have also caught on very well. People are grooving to these versions as well. Overall, the response and reviews to all three songs have been very good. I also have an unplugged version of Dil ke paas, which is a duet between Armaan and me. That’s another one I hav e in the film.”

The singer says she is currently working with her sister Khushali Kumar on a single. About her other projects, she says, “I have sung for Noor, which will be releasing next year and I also sang a song for Mubarakan.”
