What’s It All About?

The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is a leading film festival in Australia and one of the world’s oldest, alongside Cannes and Berlin. MIFF takes place in the heart of the city and it showcases films from around the world but it is equally committed to local films. It also hosts celebratory world premieres of local films. In its 66th year, MIFF has two categories of awards : MIFF Shorts Awards and the Audience Awards for most popular narrative feature and documentary, as voted by the audience.

 Opening Night Gala

The festival will kick off with the World Premiere of Greg McLean’s survival thriller Jungle, starring Daniel Radcliffe. Supported by the MIFF Premiere Fund, Jungle tells the extraordinary true story of Yossi Ghinsberg, who spent three weeks lost in the Amazon in his early 20s.

The MIFF Premiere Fund brings six world premieres to the 66th MIFF, including opening night film Jungle and joyous indigenous feature documentary The Song Keepers.

To celebrate the fund’s 10th year, MIFF looks back at the fund’s early years by screening three classics: Balibo, Bastardy and Blessed.

In 2017, MIFF will present a massive

Sci-Fi Retrospective featuring many of the genre’s most ground-breaking, influential and important films alongside some of its most inventive and entertaining. The titles in the programme are:

  • Masterpiece Ikarie XB-1
  • The 10th Victim
  • These Are The Damned

 MIFF Kids’ Gala

The MIFF Kids’ Gala returns in 2017 with the Australian premiere of Rock Dog, a new film by Toy Story 2 co-director Ash Brannon. The film follows a Tibetan mastiff who leaves the mountains for the big city to seek out his musical destiny in this independent animation starring the voices of Luke Wilson and Eddie Izzard.
