Much Needed ‘Lift’

The big, and very welcome, news in the week that went by was that of Airlift soaring past the Rs 100-crore mark after a strong showing in its second weekend.

A film based on the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, where the hero is involved more in cutting through the bureaucratic red tape rather than singlehandedly and physically taking on the villains, is not something one would consider commercially ‘safe’ in the not-too-distant past. Airlift’s success is eloquent proof – if indeed more was needed after a spate of unlikely hits and high-profile disappointments in the last few years – that the audience for Hindi cinema has moved on from the formulaic staple that held sway for much of the last two decades.  One hopes that this seismic change in audience tastes and preferences is something that has been recognised, and acted upon, by those involved in films that are currently under production or development.

Airlift is the 40th Hindi film to collect over Rs100 crore nett at the domestic box office, a list that includes Bahubali which astoundingly crossed the mark on the back of its dubbed Hindi version alone.  This week, to commemorate Airlift’s remarkable success, we have compiled an updated list of box office centurions. Take a look at the table below:

So there you have it, a very eminent roster indeed and may its tribe increase!

For now, congratulations are in order to everyone associated with Airlift and the celebrations are not theirs alone. Thanks to the film’s success, 2016 has ‘taken off’ to a bright start, dispelling some of the gloom of a rather underwhelming 2015 which saw – since we are in the mood for aviation references and puns – plenty of stalled engines, turbulent conditions and crash landings. One hopes that the releases scheduled in the weeks and months to come shall get an added thrust thanks to the slipstream provided by Airlift and carry us all to greater heights. Wright, brothers?!
