Musical Chairs: Republic Day Weekend

Since the last couple of years, the Republic Day holiday has proved quite lucky for the Hindi film industry. All the big stars are now virtually clambering over each other to release their films on January 26, especially in 2018, as the date coincides with a Friday. This particular Republic Day has become like a game of musical chairs in Bollywood.
Marking this date first was Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary starring Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee. However, the makers delayed their film’s release when they learnt that Rajinikanth’s 2.0 was also to release on that day. But 2.0 was moved to April 2018 when Akshay Kumar’s PadMan jumped ahead to catch the long weekend, to release on January 25. Since their biggest threat, 2.0, had been postponed, Aiyaary leapt back to its original release date of January 26.
In the midst of this mele, we’ve heard a rumour that is certain to make everyone sweat. The buzz in the trade is that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati is also vying for the January 26, 2018 slot after being postponed from December 1, 2017. If the Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor-starrer does hit the marquee on this coveted Republic Day, we wonder what will happen to the other releases.
