‘My biggest break’

Choreographer Ruel Dausan Varindani is the man behind Anurag Basu’s film Jagga Jasoos’s much-loved song Galti se mistake. Varindani who made Ranbir Kapoor dance to his tunes, share’s his journey with Rohini Nag Madnani about Basu, Kapoor and the song

Big Break

I have earlier done a film for Yash Raj Films titled Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, but it didn’t get that big a response and it wasn’t a peppy number. So I would say that this song has been my biggest break. I met Anurag sir when I was working on Sony Television’s reality show Super Dancer. I was one of the choreographers on the show and he was the judge. I won the show and even before the show ended, Anurag sir asked me to choreograph a song for his film. It was such a surreal moment as I have been working in the television industry for almost 15 years. I meet many film producers and directors but no one had ever asked me to be a part of their film.

Keeping It Real

This is basically my style of dancing, I am known for dance moves like this on all my shows. My Hip Hop dance group is known for dance routines like these. I am originally from the Philippines and I used to participate in dance battles in Vegas, representing the Philippines. This year, I am representing the Philippines in India.

On Anurag Basu

He is one of the most balanced people I have ever known. He is kind of old school when it comes to showing emotions onscreen and otherwise as well. There is a lot of improvisation on his sets, and the impromptu changes that are made on the sets add a lot to the scene. He called me and told me he wanted me to do this song in my style. I worked on the song and showed him a video I had made for the choreography. He instantly loved it! Even when he was editing the film and saw the song again, he messaged me and praised my work.

On Galti Se Mistake

When I heard the song, I actually didn’t understand the lyrics properly but I thought the music was really good and it could be choreographed in a fun way. After understanding the song, it took me three hours to choreograph it. After that, we finished shooting for the song in four shifts. We used to rehearse with the team during the day and shoot at night.

On Ranbir Kapoor

He is not only an amazing actor but an equally amazing person. He is such a fast learner and he literally wanted to become me and copied even minute expressions. He didn’t rehearse the song. I showed him the video of my choreography, After that, half an hour before shoots, he used to practice the steps a bit. He learnt everything on the sets. When I used to teach him a step, he used to observe not only my moves but expressions too.
