We need to bring back the long-song format

tanishkbagchi1-1Music composer Tanishk Bagchi talks about recreating cult classic Humma humma

Tanishk Bagchi’s debut song Baano became a party anthem and quickly catapulted him into the big league of singers. The composer went on to sing Fake Ishq in Housefull 3, Bolna in Kapoor & Sons, and Allah Hu Akbar and Rabba in Sarbjit. Bagchi’s latest release Humma humma, the reprised version, has made him a household name.

“I have been inspired by the music of AR Rahman since I was a child. There’s Rahman in everything I apply to my music. It is only because of him that I am getting an opportunity to work with him. Producing a track for him is the best thing that has ever happened to me. “

Was it not daunting to recreate a cult favourite song of the ’90s? “Well, of course, I was intimidated. In the dance scene, the song once ruled hearts and the charts. It was a song ahead of its time. It is ahead of its time even today. So changing the vibe of the song was very difficult and risky. But since the song is trending right now, I feel that people appreciate good music.”

On the trend of remixing songs, Bagchi says, “It is happening due to a certain level of saturation in the industry. People have lost patience, not just with music but in their lives too.  We need to bring people back to the era of long-song formats. But these songs have to be remixed with honest intentions, not just for the masses to dance to.”

Bagchi reveals how he bagged the project. “I have worked on Dharma films before and I got a call one day, asking me to croon for this particular song. There was a situation in the movie, in which they required a Rahman sir song and it had to be recreated. The requirement was of a sensuous song and I followed suit.”

But remixing a classic song comes with baggage. “I had to prepare myself to deal with negativity. A lot of fans might not take it in the right spirit. But working with Rahman sir was my main focus.

“I believe there is no need to play Humma humma in the retro tracks, it is a modern-day song. Why do you need a guy from abroad or an English guy remixing that song and playing it? My intention was why not Humma humma playing again? I feel I have revived that song. I have paid tribute to the song and Rahman sir. I think Rahman sir had made the song with an intention that someone might come and push the ball forward. People have taken this song very positively. I am getting calls from big production houses,” he says.

And future projects? Bagchi remarks, “I have bagged Badrinath Ki Dulhani, Half Girlfriend and Munna Michael.”
