Over The Moon

Disco king of Hindi music Bappi Lahiri is on cloud nine these days. Lahiri, who is in the US collaborating with a bunch of international artistes, is still euphoric after singing a song called Shona for Disney’s upcoming animation film Moana.

“I got a call from Ashim Samanta, who told me, ‘There is this song I want you to sing. The lyrics are… ‘I love my shona…’  And when the word ‘shona’ came, I couldn’t think of anyone else but you.’ I also couldn’t say no to him as it was a Disney film,” recounts Lahiri.

The singer reveals that apart from the song, he thoroughly enjoyed doing the voiceover.  “I enjoyed the dubbing a lot. I dubbed for the character Tomatoa, a giant crab. And since Bappi Lahiri is known for his shiny gold, Tomatoa is fond of shiny treasures. That was my connection with the character and it was also a first-of-its-kin experience.”

Currently in the US, Lahiri says, “Moana is a huge film here, there are banners everywhere. So I am very proud that I dubbed and sang for the film. It was a very different experience even when it came to singing because English songs are sung in opera style. Singing this song was the best experience I have had in the 48 years I have worked in the music industry.”

Working on multiple international projects, the singer adds, “My son Bappa and I have produced an album called Indian Melody. It is a mix of Indian heritage music, from Sufi, bhajans, ghazals to Rabindranath Tagore and classical music. I am also collaborating with Snoop Dog in a single and also with Akon. So I have a lot of international projects in the pipeline.”

Moana releases in India on December 2.
