“Recreated songs are either loved or hated”

Sukriti Kakar is the voice behind the song that’s all the rage, Zubi zubi. In an interview to Sayali Parab, Kakar talks about the responsibilities that come with singing a recreated version of a hit number

B30A1672Sukriti Kakar has enthralled audiences with songs like Pehli baar from Dil Dhadakne Do, Kar gayi chull from Kapoor And Sons and Rustom vahi from Rustom. She recently crooned Zubi zubi from Naam Shabana, adding high energy to the sound track. The song is a recreated version of Bappi Lahiri’s Zubi zubi from the film Dance Dance.

Kakar says she was initially approached for another song, which did not work out. However, she was later called to record Zubi zubi. She says she felt ‘liberated’ while recording the songs. “Some artistes give me all the freedom I need to work. While recording Zubi zubi, they made me listen to the music and then let me experiment with the song. It was very liberating and a lot of fun because they let me do my own thing. Somehow singing dance numbers comes very naturally to me.”

Adding an element of intrigue, the songstress says that although the song is a peppy number, it also contains some mystery, “It is a dance number but it is also a situational song and there is a story behind it. I was told to keep it peppy and high.”

The young talent shares that revamping a popular song brings in a lot of responsibilities for a playback singer. “In recreated songs, the audience either loves it or hates it. There is no in-between. I gave it my best effort and everybody liked the song. I think it has to do something with singing a remake. I remember the song very well as my family used to listen to it. It’s a great thing that, as a playback singer, I got to sing this legendry song. But since it’s been recreated with new actors, in new era, it creates a sense of responsibility,” explains Kakar.

Having made her debut in the music industry only three years ago, the singer says that since there are so many new talents coming into the industry, singers have to make an effort to be heard by the audience constantly. “Every second, there are new singers and now, even actresses are singing songs. So it’s very difficult. It is therefore very important for a playback singer to have releases back-to-back, otherwise people tend to forget you. Once people start identifying you and, if your songs leave an impact on them, the chances of them forgetting you are smaller. Also, for newbies in this generation, we have to keep the media in the loop. Your social media presence has to be bang-on.”
