The 11th annual Seattle South Asian Film Festival (SSAFF), presented by Tasveer, showcases thought-provoking, independent films that shed light on women’s issues, human rights, LGBT issues, politics and art from South Asia and its diaspora. It is the largest South Asian film festival in the country.

SSAFF 2016 includes 23 feature films and 22 shorts from nine countries, plus a landmark community symposium about film censorship in South Asia and topical film programs centered on youth, sexual minorities and mental health. It focuses on the theme #LoveWins.

Closing Film

Waiting, directed by Anu Menon and starring Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin, is about a special relationship between two people who befriend each other unexpectedly in a hospital while nursing their individual spouses who are in coma. It is a film about grief but it is also about confronting it. Tenderly and humorously, the film presents a profound query: what does it mean to love someone? Is it to let go of your beloved in spite of your emotional need for them or is it to unconditionally accept them in whatever shape or form they are?
