Seizing An Opportunity

Ankit Tiwari is the toast of Bollywood right now. After delivering hits like Sunn raha hai from Aashiqui 2, Galliyan from Ek Villian, Dil darbadar from PK, Tu hai ki nahin from Roy and Dil cheez tujhe de di from Airlift, Tiwari has added one more composition to his hit list – Piya more from the upcoming film Baadshaho. Tiwari talks to Komal Sharma about doing an item number for the first time, and a lot more.

ZK3A5451How did you bag this project?

I had been working with music label T- Series for my earlier works. Then Bhushanji (Kumar) offered me the Baadshaho project. I was very excited when I got to know that Milanji (Luthria), Ajay sir and Emraan Hashmi were working in this film. And I got to do an item number for the first time, whereas producers and director usually approach me for romantic numbers or love songs. Milan sir and his team of Baadshaho said they needed a raunchy number, which has a situation that has Emraan and Sunny Leone performing.

How excited were you to do a different genre?

As a music director, you want to attempt all genres but you don’t get the chance because people don’t ask you to sing in a different genre every time. That’s why I seized this opportunity. Listeners get to know about a song only after it releases. The song combination, like the hero and actress combination or which banner the film belongs to matters when it comes to promoting the song.

There was a time when romantic songs where in vogue, like songs from Aashiqui 2, Roy and even Katra katra from Alone. So you don’t want to stay in the same place. Ask any artiste… They all want something different. That’s why I was happy my director wanted me to do something different even though he knew I had sung and composed mainly romantic songs.

Have you added any special elements to your first raunchy number?

It’s not like I had to do anything extra or add something special. Since I am a music composer, I should know how to work on any genre. I am from UP and music is in my blood. So, no, I did not have to do anything special for this song

What kind of preparation did you go through?

In the first shot, the song is never ready. It needs a lot of setting. Then you have to understand what exactly the director wants, then you focus on the lyrics which should have in-depth meaning. The title says ‘Piya more’ which is taken from Awadhi, a language spoken in an era where people used to sing and dance a lot and that’s why they used words like these. I have used Awadhi in Galliyan too. Awadhi is a very easy language to understand. So you need to take care of things like these and this takes time.

Was there anything you were sceptical about while preparing for this song?

I was scared while doing this song because Milan sir is a great musical director and I was wondering whether I would be convincing enough. Since I respect him a lot, I was worried whether or not he would like my work. Later, I learnt that he did like it. And he wasn’t the only one. Emraan and Sunny too liked the song. Via Twitter, I learnt that Ajay sir had tweeted that he was waiting for my song to release.  I felt good when the entire team liked my song.

Tell us something about the Piya more song?

I have not sung Piya more. This song has been sung beautifully by Neeti Mohan and Mika Singh. I have only played the role of a music director and music composer for this song.  This song is very close to my heart as it has meaningful lyrics. It is upbeat and has a modern tune. But the film belongs to 1950 or thereabouts. So we used the tabla, harmonium and a mix of different instruments and elements.

With changing trends, do you believe that lyrics are not given due importance?

Lyrics have never been very important in our industry and lyricists have never got their dues. When it comes to content, you are referring to writers. Singers only get paid and, sometimes, a music director gets credit. In our industry, the film director and actors get all the appreciation but the writers don’t get much attention.

What’s next for you?

I am coming out with ‘Originals By Ankit’, which will have 8 to 10 songs.I am also doing some films that I can’t talk about now.
