As we enter the last lap of 2016, we look at the trailers of the films lined up for release – which one’s creating the biggest buzz?
There is no arguing that the best way to hook the audience and ensure healthy first-day collections is to lure them to cinemas with a well-cut trailer. And in times when first-day and weekend collections matter more than ever before, there is no exaggerating the role movie trailers play in making or breaking a film.
With only two months to go before we wrap 2016, we have a great mix of films lined up for release. We will therefore be discussing the trailers of Befikre, Dangal, Kahaani 2 and Dear Zindagi. Kaabil will release during the Republic Day weekend, on January 26, 2017.
Given the content and cast of the films lined up, expectations are soaring, putting considerable pressure on the makers to create the biggest impact they can while unveiling the first glimpse of their films. The first trailer of a film must be hard-hitting, convey the right message and be appealing enough to translate into footfalls when the film finally releases. Not many films have done great business at the box office this year, so far, but the trailers that released recently suggest that things are about to change.
Kicking off the list is the trailer of the much-anticipated Aditya Chopra’s directorial venture, Yash Raj Films’ Befikre, which features Chopra’s protégés, Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor. This uber-cool, coming-of-the age love story based in Paris, the city of love, does not have the Chopra stamp on it but the film has grabbed eyeballs thanks to its bold theme. The film, slated to release on December 9, had a lavish trailer launch in Paris.
Aamir Khan-starrer and biographical sports drama Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, not only impressed the audience but also the trade. The film, set to hit cinemas during the Christmas weekend, tells the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who coached his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, to become wrestlers. The film is Khan’s first outing after two years and hence expectations are higher than usual.
A sequel to the successful 2012 Kahaani, Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, features Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal in the lead. The film has piqued curiosity among tradewallahs and the audience alike, ever since it was announced. Tapping into the thriller genre, the movie will see Balan as Durga Rani Singh and Rampal as a police officer.
Director Gauri Shinde is back after her 2012 Sridevi-starrer English Vinglish, and this time too, Shinde offers a light-hearted flick. Produced by Gauri Khan, Karan Johar, and Shinde under the banners of Red Chillies Entertainment, Dharma Productions, and Hope Productions, Dear Zindagi features Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt. It is set to release on November 25. While the teaser swept up the audience like a sea breeze, the film showcases an unconventional bond between Khan and Bhatt.
FilmKraft Productions’ Kaabil directed by Sanjay Gupta and produced by Rakesh Roshan features Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. The film, set to release on January 26, 2017, is a thriller, where the protagonists are both blind and fall in love. The trailer was applauded due to its hatke subject.
This week, we asked tradewallahs to comment on the impact of these trailers and what they think and feel about these films and their fate at the box office:
Kumar Taurani, Producer
The trailer that has created maximum buzz is of Dangal, first for Aamir Khan and second it looks very promising. The trailer gives you an idea of what the film is about and, second, it’s a sports film and this is a theme that’s currently working. And when you have Mr Khan, you know the film has a lot of potential.
Also, they started the marketing well in advance, when the first poster was put out with Aamir Khan’s look becoming the talking point, and then the trailer released. The film has all kinds of elements that will help it work at the box office. About the other trailers… Kahaani 2, Kaabil, Dear Zindagi and Befikre all look fresh and different.
Jayantilal Gada, Producer
It wouldn’t be fair for me to talk about Kahaani 2 but among the other upcoming trailers, the one everyone loves is Aamir Khan’s Dangal. Dear Zindagi’’s trailer too looks very fresh; the film is a slice-of-life film. the Kaabil trailer has suspense and action while Befikre is for youngsters and a new-age love story.
Ratan Jain, Producer
The best trailer so far is that of Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which tells you what to expect from the film, from drama to emotion but in a subtle way. When you have Aamir Khan in a film, you know exactly what to expect from the film. The Dear Zindagi trailer is very soulful and gives you a very fresh feeling. And the fresh casting of Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan is something everyone is looking forward too. On the other hand, Kahaani 2 and Kaabil are both thrillers and the trailers keep you guessing. Befikre is for the youth.
Vinod Bachchan, Producer
I think all the trailers that have released have huge potential as they all are being talked about. The Dangal trailer gives you goosebumps as the production quality looks massive. It has action, drama and emotion. The film speaks about the father-daughter relationship and once you finish watching the trailer, you want to watch it again and again because of Aamir Khan’s marvellous act.
Dear Zindagi is not the usual Shah Rukh Khan film and everyone is looking forward to it. Kahaani 2’s trailer gives you a feeling of watching something you’ve never seen before. With Kahaani 2, you know the content is going to be outstanding as watching the trailer is thrilling. I also loved the trailer of Kaabil as it leaves you speechless and you can see the effort put in by Hrithik Roshan. It’s the perfect trailer.
Anees Bazmee, Director
Aamir Khan’s Dangal’s trailer looks very new and promising. It hints at what to watch out for in the film and powerful performances from everyone. The trailer has emotion, drama and sports, as well as Aamir Khan in two different looks, and I am totally looking forward to watching this film. Speaking of Kahaani 2, the first film was a huge hit and the trailer of the second one too leaves you speechless with a wonderful performance from Vidya Balan. These two trailers are my favorites.
Luv Ranjan, Director
The best trailer I have seen in a long time is definitely that of Dangal. Director Nitesh Tiwari in a very simple way tells you what the film is about and what you should expect from it. It doesn’t try too hard to impress you; it’s neither sugary nor terribly dramatic. So you know what you can expect from the film. And, of course, it’s an Aamir Khan movie.
Ritesh Shah, Writer
These days, it has become very important to get your trailer right as it tells the audience what to expect from your film. And I believe Dangal’s trailer is spot on. As a member of the paying public, I would go to watch an Aamir Khan film.
Another trailer that I really liked is was that of Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi, which suggests a very different story, something you have not seen before. Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil is another trailer that was very intriguing. The USP of the film will be its plot and the trailer shows both happy and sad times.
Devang Sampat, Director, India Strategic Initiatives, Cinepolis
Aamir Khan has once again delivered a trailer which the audience loves. The trailer of Dangal has created huge excitement and we are sure the film will take the biggest opening of 2016. The trailer talks about what to expect from the film, and now everyone is waiting for Christmas.
As for the other trailers, those of Befikre, Kahaani 2, Dear Zindagi and Kaabil… there is one common factor, that these films have been made for the multiplex audience and we, at Cinepolis, are very excited to showcase them at our plexes. All of them have used unique techniques to launch their trailers and this is definitely going to help Q4, 2016, to become the biggest quarter of the year.
Tinku Singh, Group President & CSO (Chief Strategy Officer) –SRS Group
The trailers of Dangal, Befikre, Kahaani 2, Dear Zindagi and Kaabil have all caught on and each one is unique. Dangal is a biographical sports drama that will work, first due to Aamir Khan and his perfectionist approach to making movies, and second, the success of M S Dhoni, a sport-based movie, will raise expectations from Dangal.
Befikre features Ranveer Singh, who is a favorite among the audience, and the film also caters to youngsters who will definitely come to watch him. Kahaani 2 is a movie which marks Vidya Balan as a fantastic actor. The trailer looks even more intriguing than the first film did and gives us a glimpse into what is going to be a very complex narrative. Like Kahaani, the sequel too is moody and atmospheric, with dim lights and shadowy characters.
Dear Zindagi featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt, is a very slice-of-life film and is sure to drive away your midweek blues. It will be a light movie, like Finding Fanny and Gauri Shinde’s previous movie English Vinglish, which was loved by the audience. Now they are waiting for her second outing.
Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kaabil is a complete entertainer which has thrills, action and romance. Hrithik’s comeback as an action hero and Sanjay Gupta’s direction make it even more interesting.
Harsh Jain, Sanman Group, Exhibitor
Of these trailers, Dangal’s looks like the biggest of them all. The trailer is intense with a sense of patriotism, and the hard work that Aamir and the entire team had put into the making of this mega film is apparent through the trailer. Dear Zindagi and Befikre look fresh from their trailers, and this is what our audience, especially youngsters, are dying to watch. Kaabil and Kahaani 2 are thrillers. The trailers are well cut and build interest and intrigue.
Sanjay Dalia, President of Carnival Cinemas
After the Diwali blockbusters, all these recently released trailers look very promising and the movies will do very well at the box office, according to industry trends and feedback from our patrons. Gauri Shinde’s direction, Alia Bhatt’s liveliness and SRK’s on-screen presence gives Dear Zindagi a very vivacious feel . Aditya Chopra’s Befikre looks very colorful and youthful, plus the chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor is astonishing.
Kahaani 2 lives up to the legacy of its first part and no actress other than Vidya Balan could do justice to the role of Durga Rani Singh. Dangal and Kaabil are my personal favorites and are sure-shot blockbusters. The casting of Dangal is fabulous and Aamir’s perfection is unbeatable. The movie will definitely rule the box office.
Hrithik and Yami as a sightless couple will definitely touch hearts in Kaabil and will be appreciated by the audience all over. Although the trailer gives out the entire storyline and it seems very simple, it is a very emotional film and the Indian audience still loves this emotional connect.
Raees will be another masterpiece of SRK from Rahul Dholakia. I wish all these films churn out a good yield for producers and exhibitors. The next three months seem exceptionally promising for the entire film industry.
Rahul Puri, MD, Mukta Arts
All the trailers look outstanding and all these movies are much awaited at the box office. Befikre has a very fresh approach and it certainly hits home with its TG. The youth has taken to the film and its music due to the energy in the trailer. I am sure if the film can replicate this, it is sure to do well.
Kahaani 2 builds excellently on the brand established by the first film. The audience now knows what to expect and the trailer manages to keep the mystery alive. Dangal and Kaabil have two superstars and the trailers deliver what you would expect from each of these heroes. Aamir, the consummate actor and performer, and Hrithik building on his persona with a stellar trailer. I think these films look like sure shots.
Dear Zindagi is the freshest of them all, if you ask me. Despite having a superstar, the film’s trailer is very exciting. None of the superstar trappings are present and it gives the feel of something new and novel. Gauri Shinde coming back as a director and a very unique casting of Shah Rukh and Alia make this perhaps the most anticipated film of them all.
Murli Chhatwani, Managing Director, Muviwale Entertainment
I like the trailers of all the upcoming films. They are of five very different genres – drama, romance, suspense, slice of life and action-thriller. I am glad that our industry is producing content-driven films like these. My personal favourite from the list is Dangal since it is my preferred genre but I will watch all five films in their first weekend.
Thomas D’Souza, Programming Head, PVR Cinemas
In a year replete with realised potential – the incredible performance of women athletes at the Olympics and a very strong possibility of the first woman President of the United States – Dangal cuts across borders and speaks to society everywhere. We trust Nitish Tiwary and Aamir Khan to tell us a compelling story as promised in the trailer.
Befikre brings us the unbridled passion and enthusiasm of Ranveer Singh and Aditya Chopra, which we believe will be irresistible at the BO. And Kahaani 2 seems to be darker in theme and treatment than its predecessor, but things won’t be so grim at the BO. Dear Zindagi brings together BO darling Alia Bhatt and the talented Gauri Shinde, who we believe will repeat and perhaps outdo the success of English Vinglish.
Kaabil promises to be a good crime thriller, which seems to have something for everyone. The trailer looks very good and stokes just right amount of curiosity.
Arijit Dutta, Distributor
The trailer that looks most promising is definitely the one of Aamir Khan’s Dangal. The film will be one of the biggest hits of 2016 and might break records. Since the film is aimed at all kinds of audiences, from the masses to the classes, it will surely take a bumper opening. Another fresh and unique trailer is that of Dear Zindagi. The chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt is very fresh and different, and since Gauri Shinde’s last film was very good, the audience is looking forward to her second film.
