Take Two

The first quarter of this year has been lukewarm, with very few films doing well, like Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Raees and Kaabil made news for their clash at the box office but they deserved to make more money than they did. All hopes are now on the second quarter of the year, from big Bollywood as well as Hollywood releases. The next big thing is Baahubali: The Conclusion and The Fate Of The Furious. Bhoomi (Sanjay Dutt’s comeback), The Spiderman Homecoming, Shah Rukh Khan’s The Ring, Tubelight, Jagga Jasoos and Robot 2.0 are a few of the films I am looking forward to.

We have high expectations from the upcoming quarter solely because, after two years of waiting for Baahubali’s next installment, Baahubali: The Conclusion is up for release. Sarkar 3, which brings back Bachchan saab in the title role, too has generated much anticipation among the audience. As far as the box office goes, everyone is eager to see what Baahubali: The Conclusion will do. Half Girlfriend and Atithii Iin London too have the potential to work wonders at the box office. I hope the next quarter is better than the one that just wrapped up. I feel the second quarter can be pegged as a ‘Quarter Of Sequels’. With big franchises releasing, let’s not forget that April will be the season of cricket, which will affect our business, for sure.

In the first quarter of the year, not many films lived up to expectations. Apart from Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, none of the films left a mark. The next three months have potentially good releases, especially Baahubali: The Conclusion. We expect the second quarter to be better than the first.

The second quarter of 2017 will be prosperous solely for one reason – Baahubali: The Conclusion. The audience is eagerly waiting for the film, and after the trailers released, anticipation is high. The first three months of 2017 were not up to the mark, and despite many big releases, the only films that managed to do well were Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Raees and Kaabil carried high expectations and although they did well, they did not live up to expectations. The IPL will surely affect our business but, still, the second quarter will be good.

The only reason the upcoming quarter will be cheerful is the release of Baahubali: The Conclusion. Everyone, from age 8 to 80, wants to know why Kattappa killed Baahubali and I am sure the film will make and break records. Next week’s release Begum Jaan too has the potential to do well. The coming months are filled with sequels and strong, women-centric films. The content that will be served in the coming three months has potential to translate into impressive returns at the box office. We saw many films disappoint early this year but with the line-up for the next quarter has the potential to make up for that.

The first quarter of the year was just about okay and films like Raees, Kaabil, Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania worked well. Of these four, only Raees and Kaabil performed well in single screens, and to an extent, Badrinath Ki Dulhania. This is bad for the industry and proof of this is that single-screens are shutting down.  The second quarter looks very promising with Baahubali: The Conclusion, which I think will be a humongous success and will be a breath of fresh air for both single-screens and multiplexes. Among the other films, I think Half Girlfriend, Raabta, Begum Jaan and Maatr seem promising.

January to March is never really a good period for films to release. In the first quarter, only Badrinath Ki Dulhania did great business at the box office. Phillauri put in an average performance, just like the other releases. I am waiting for SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion as the film has marvellous potential to score big.

The first quarter had only two good films – Jolly LLB 2 and Dharma Productions’ Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The rest were very dull. The audience wants content-rich films and the coming months have a lot of big films. Begum Jaan is a content-oriented film and so is Maatr. But I believe – and I am sure the entire industry too believes – that Baahubali: The Conclusion will be a game-changer.

The year ahead seems positive since there are many Hollywood films like The Fate Of The Furious releasing alongside some good Hindi films. In the first quarter, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Jolly LLB 2 impressed the audience but the other films were not all that great. We have many big-banner and big-star films releasing in the next few months like Baahubali: The Conclusion.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Jolly LLB 2 were the only two films that worked well in the first quarter. I am assuming Half Girlfriend and Baahubali: The Conclusion will be hits. Most of the films in the first quarter did not work as expected. Commando 2 worked only in single screens and failed in multiplexes. Badrinath Ki Dulhania also fared well.
