The Day I Fought With Salman Khan – Subhash Ghai

Actors are actors and they can never be like normal people. You cannot become an actor if you don’t have a child in you who looks into himself in a different manner. I have met and known all kind of actors from Shatrughan Sinha to Dilip Kumar since the last five decades . They are basically spoilt pampered kids who reign the industry in their prime time with millions of fans around and they also get insecure with an inch of a fall… every star writes his own history But Salman is very special to me ever since I saw him as young lad playing in my building premises in Bandra with Sohail, Arbaaz and Nadeem Irani in the early ‘80s. After a few years when I was shooting outside a building (SRK’s Mannat now) I saw Salman standing and watching my shoot. When I asked him as to what was he doing there, he looked away and said, ‘I have come to meet you.’ I asked him why and he said with an attitude, ‘I want to be the hero in your film.’ I smiled and sent him back saying, ‘Sure. Sure’, noticing his arrogant body language. Next thing I got to know that he has got a role in Sooraj Barjatya’s film Maine Pyar Kiya, which became the biggest hit of the year. Thereafter whenever I met him , he always looked away . I found his attitude very funny though now we all know that this is the way he always talks. He rarely looks into your eyes. He became an A-list star in the ‘90s with Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! but we never communicated in parties though I had very cordial relationship with Salim sahib, one of the most balanced persons till date. I believe Salim sahib never approved of his attitude towards people because Salman was always a boy with strong likes and dislikes. We all know his love stories and repercussions on him for being possessive .

One late night, he entered into a friend’s party in town and joined my group of friends but avoided me. I felt uneasy and moved aside but he went on appearing in front of me to pick up a fight and he was successful since I too had lost my patience by then. We fought with no solid reason. It was very embarrassing for me that night and I came back home completely depressed. Next morning I got a call form Salim sahib who paid his respect to me by apologising and sent Salman to my home within one hour. Salman came and stood in front of me like a guilty child. I smiled and asked him, ‘What happened to you last night ?’ and he said, ‘I have come here because my father told me to do so.’ I said, ‘So you are not sorry?’ and he replied, ‘Of course I am.’ That’s how we broke the ice. This meeting became a moment of love for each other. Since then Salman treats me like an elder brother or father and I genuinely love him for whatever he is. For me he is still a child. We worked in one film Yuvvraaj in our lowest time but he was very respectful to me as a professional on the set and surprised everyone. In fact, I have seen Salman growing up as a child to a boy to a man and then to a human being with dignity. I admire the way he has evolved in these 50 years from an arrogant child to a stubborn boy, a possessive lover, to a mild and soft person and rising up as a selfless philanthropist with his Being Human organisation today. Now I can say it with pride that he is the finest son, great brother, sincere friend and a compassionate human being for the needy. His failure and superstardom has never affected him. It comes to him naturally. He is very strong man today. I love him as does the whole world simply because he has kept the child in him alive even though he is a superstar today. I wish him greater success and a happier life on his 50th birthday.
