Winning charts and hearts

Talent knows no age and that is exactly what 22-year-old songstress Sukriti Kakar is proving with her hit numbers. Elated with the response to her latest track Maine tujhko dekha from Golmaal Again!!!, Kakar talks to Bhakti Mehtaabout her association with the franchise, her collaboration with Amaal Mallik and future projects

Sukriti Kakar is giddy with glee – and with good reason. Kakar is basking in the reaction to her latest track, Maine tujhko dekha from Golmaal Again!!!. “The response has been great, people love the song. It’s a great feeling when your work is appreciated and I’m glad to be associated with the Golmaal franchise. Music magician Amaal Malik has added a fun element that beautifully complements the on-screen picturisation,” she smiles.

Talking about how her Golmaal journey began, the brief she was given and her collaboration with Amaal Mallik, she says, “We did the first dub with scratch lyrics and then they decided to go ahead with the scratch itself without making any changes. We played it by ear and ended up retaining the scratch version.”

She goes on to discuss the song. “The track Maine tujhko dekha is a contemporary take on the ’90s’ smash hit Neend churai meri from Ishq. While the lyrics are fresh, the main chorus brings back a heady wave of nostalgia, especially with Ajay Devgn on screen! The peppy number continues to trail-blaze its way across both, charts and hearts.”

She adds, “We have tried to give a modern touch to it while keeping the essence of the original song intact. I guess we have succeeded as the song is gaining a lot of appreciation. It’s always a big responsibility being part of a re-creation. I feel completely humbled and grateful.”

Voicing her thoughts on the trend of old songs coming back to the movies, she opines, “The recall value of such songs is always great. These are songs that everyone can relate to, both the older and younger generation. If the song suits the film and if everyone enjoys listening to these tracks, why not make them?”

From Kar gayi chul to Maine tujhko dekha, each one of Kakar’s songs has connected with the audience. She remarks, “It’s necessary to connect with listeners of all age groups as they are not only your audience but also your most honest with critics. Now with social media, one can be in touch and gauge the likes and dislikes of listeners, and I think that benefits a performer greatly. Good music can boost a film’s collections as in the case of many films lately.”

Kakar shares details of her future projects. “I’ve just completed a long US tour with Salim-Sulaiman. My twin sister Prakriti and I just came back from China after doing a successful concert there and will soon fly to Antwerp and Belgium for the same. I have also recorded quite a few songs but can only talk about them when they release.”
