“Zaalima Is My Best New Year Gift”

HarshdeepSongstress Harshdeep Kaur talks about her prep for Zaalima in Raees, and the compliments she has received

Raees’s Zaalima by Arijit Singh and Harshdeep Kaur is a soothing melody which makes you want to listen to it in a loop. “Pritam’s JAM8 got in touch with me and he then asked me to dub a song. It was in Arijit Singh’s voice and, in that very moment, I felt it was a very beautiful song and that people would love it.”

Kaur says that while crooning Zaalima, she kept Mahira Khan in mind to get her expressions right. “It’s a very romantic song and I had to maintain the cuteness in my voice. I think the tune speaks for itself. I had sung for Mahira Khan before and while recording this song, I kept her in mind. Zaalima is a romantic song so I had to sing with feeling. I had to get the emotions right, through my voice,” she says.

Revealing what she felt when she listened to the final track, the singer says, “A singer is always excited to hear the final outcome. We usually forget about the song after dubbing it and we come back to it only to listen to the final track. It is exciting to listen to how the song has been mixed and what it sounds like, overall. When I heard this song, I was very happy with the outcome. It has also been picturised very beautifully, I did not expect it to be so nice.”

Calling it a “best New Year gift”, Kaur remarks, “I wasn’t expecting the song to release so soon and I had no idea when it was going to release. It all happened so quickly. I sang the song in December and it has already released. It was my best New Year gift. In fact, it released on Gurupurab. I even posted on my Facebook page, saying what better gift could I have received on Gurupurab.”

Kaur says she has been receiving a flood of messages via Twitter and Facebook. “People love my voice and also the combination of Arijit and my voice. I have also received compliments saying that my voice perfectly matches Mahira Khan’s and that’s a huge compliment. When people think my voice suits the actress, I know I have done a good job.”

But what she treasures most is Shah Rukh Khan’s tweet appreciating the song. “That was a big thing. The industry has also praised me for this song. My singer friends are messaging me to congratulate me for a successful song at the beginning of the year. It’s a very nice feeling.”
