Falguni Thakore is a seasoned player in the costumes department and began her career many years ago with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Kareeb. There’s been no looking back ever since.
When I started my career, it was not very difficult to land a project. The challenge was to understand the director’s vision and portray it on screen. My first film was Kareeb with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. After that, I started doing a lot of ad films. Post which I worked with Abhishek Bachchan in films like Yuva, Dus and Sarkar Raj.
I have not stuck to a specific style of clothes or film. It is solely the script that attracts me. I have followed my heart and the kind of work I am offered. And it’s obvious that the industry appreciates my work; that’s why I get projects.
On Special 26
Special 26 was a very interesting project as it was based in the ’80s. I love designing for historic films because it’s a challenge. For this film, we designed clothes for Mumbai, Punjab and Kolkata in the ’80s. The actors offered inputs, like, Kajal Aggarwal wanted to wear a churidaar with short kurtas but we showed her some references to the ’80s heroines who used to wear patialas and she instantly agreed.
On Historical Films
If you don’t keep the real element in the film, the characters’ appearance doesn’t appeal to the audience. For example, to reduce budgets, many people use polyester or satin instead of silk. In a historical film, the challenge is to not make the characters look gaudy but appealing yet real. I believe costumes have to blend with the film and cannot stand out. If they tell their own story, it means the costume designer has not done their job. Costumes are especially important in historical films.
Actors Don’t Curb Your Creativity
It’s a myth that when you’re working with a star, you have to go with their whims. That has never happened with me. Since an actor understands the demands of a script, they get into the character and to do that, they need to dress according to the demands of the script.
I have finished shooting for Aman Ki Asha. I have Boss with Akshay Kumar lined up.
