It is heartening that the Mumbai Film Festival has been consolidating the programming strength and growing as the best film festival in India. The festival will be screening the best selection of films from all around the world. This will be supported and enhanced by a slew of academic activities like Master Classes and panel discussions by eminent personalities, including the presidents and members of the jury.
The newly introduced India Gold 2012 will showcase a selection of Indian films in a competitive format. Celebration of Italian Cinema with 30 films covering in one sweep the history of Italian cinema from 1911 to 2012 will be an amazing treat for film enthusiasts.
The festival, in order to grow further, is moving to the prestigious South Mumbai cultural complex of the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Combined with the five screens of INOX and the Art Deco theatre Liberty, this complex will offer greater number of seats this year to the audience. The suburbs of Mumbai will have the screens of Cinemax Versova and Cinemax Sion to bring the festival films to them.
It is a great honour for us that the festival will be saluting the great artist Waheeda Rehman-ji and Director-Cinematographer Zhang Yimou with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
The Mumbai Film Mart, which started yielding business in the very first year itself, is moving to the five-star Trident Hotel. Film festivals grow by providing business opportunities to professionals. Towards this end, I am sure the Mumbai Film Mart will see a lot of meaningful business activities and networking opportunities for the film professionals from India and abroad.
More than 200 selected films in seven days! We are spoilt for choice.
I am thankful to Mrs Tina Ambani, whose vision and enduring support has been the driving force of the Mumbai Film Festival. Now we have a new source of strength in American Express. I am sure the film industry will wholeheartedly support and participate in all the events of the festival, including the screenings.
