“It took just 30 minutes to land YPD”

Jasvinder Singh Bath, a writer who delivered a hit in Yamala Pagala Deewana and is geared up to pen the sequel to the film tells us about his experince…

Background

I’m a Mass Communications and Film Studies graduate from St.Xavier’s College, Kolkata. My film in college was screened at a few short film festivals and it also won the Best Film at the Kshanik Satyajit Ray Video Film Festival in 2005. After working as an assistant director in Mumbai for a few years, I switched to script-writing full-time in 2007.

In 2008, my script won an award at the India Screenwriting Workshop organised by the British Council, where the jury was headed by Shekhar Kapur. I went around looking for work after the award but none of the studio heads, producers and directors I texted replied! It was a reality check for me. Everyone wanted to back projects with big names attached to them and no one wanted to meet a new scriptwriter and hear his script.

Turning Point

The turning point came when Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi (I used to assist him) referred me to Sunny paaji. I met him and within half an hour of our meeting, he told me I would be writing his next film. I couldn’t believe my luck! That’s how Yamla Pagla Deewana (YPD) happened and I had the honour of writing a film that celebrated Dharamji’s 50 years in the film industry.

I couldn’t have asked for a better debut. It was an enriching experience for a newcomer like me and the Deols are the nicest people to work with.

Post Yamla Pagla Deewana

After the success of YPD, I concentrated on cracking the sequel. After 18 months and a few drafts, we finally have something that is far better than the first. It’s been an enjoyable experience collaborating with director Sangeeth Sivan on the YPD sequel.

From its inception, YPD was envisaged as a franchise. After its success, the catch was to come up with a sequel that was superior to the first. Usually, sequels are bad films that make double the amount of money!

I believe in working on one script at a time and giving it everything I’ve got. I’m sure people are gonna love YPD2!
