A film can speak to the audience in many ways, not least of all through its dialogue. But dialogue-writing is an art that can make or break a film. This week, we speak to dialogue writer Milap Zaveri (Grand Masti – a sex comedy), on the importance of dialogue in different genres of film
When Masti released in 2004, it became a super hit. It was a time when the audience were just about accepting sex comedies and Masti created a lot of noise. It was the humour that hooked the young audience.
After Masti became a super hit, director Indra (Kumar) wanted to work on a sequel. We came up with three to four ideas but decided we should wait for the right time. Masti became such a grand film that Indraji wanted the sequel to be outstanding. Since we decided to wait, we got busy with other projects.
On Grand Masti
A few years ago, when Indraji started working on the sequel once again that he called me and my co-writer Tusshar Hiranandani. He told us he wanted us to write the sequel as we had worked on the original film. That’s how we started working on Grand Masti. I wrote the dialogue for Grand Masti and we tried to make it the ultimate sex comedy in Hindi cinema!
It was not easy to write the script of Grand Masti. Masti had released nine years before its sequel and a new generation was now thronging the cinema halls. So we had to reach out to today’s youth. Nowadays, the youth are open to sex and sex comedy. So we had to take Grand Masti to that level.
Setting A New Milestone
We want to set a new benchmark with Grand Masti. We want it to be a film that would be difficult to beat. We made sure we made the ultimate comedy film. We have not used double entendre; only single meaning, which has double meaning.
Dialogue In Comedy Films
Like any other genre, dialogue plays a very important part in comedy too. The lines have to pack a lot of punch and drive the audience crazy with laughter. One line is all it should take.
