12th Annual Phoenix Film Festival

What’s It All About?

The Phoenix Film Festival (PFF) was established in 2000 and began to showcase feature films made on a budget of less than $ 1 million, and short films made on less than $ 50,000. Initiated by independent filmmakers to showcase independent filmmaking, it soon became Arizona’s largest film festival. The PFF annually screens over 150 films and celebrates feature films. Held in the city of Phoenix, Arizona, it is a programme under the non-profit organisation, The Phoenix Film Foundation. PFF screens various genres of films like feature films, horror, sci-fi, short films and the like.

Opening Night Film – Date Night

Date Night is a 2010 action comedy film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey. A married couple from New Jersey, Carell and Fey have two children and their domestic life has become boring. He is a tax lawyer while she is a realtor. They are motivated to re-ignite their romance after learning that their best friends are planning to divorce.

Some of the films that will be screened in the festival are:

• 20th Century Man

In the year 1938, a brilliant young scientist Robert Wallace has secretly invented the world’s first time machine. Much to his wife’s dismay, he decides to test the machine on himself by travelling a week into the future. However, the machine malfunctions and he ends up going much farther into the future than he could have anticipated – the year 2014. He must now contend with the US government’s interest in his time machine, as well as other scientists who desire its secrets.

• A Fairy Tale

The story of Jack and Jill on the night of their senior prom. When Jill goes to the prom with Prince Charming, she leaves Jack all alone. It’s then up to Jack’s sassy, drag queen, fairy godmother to save the night and help Jack finally get his happy ending.

• Alchemy And Other Imperfections

A dark fable about a man and a woman who have completely lost touch with the outside world until the woman takes one last desperate measure to erase the pesky memory that ruined their lives.

• Animalario

Dr Ego’s hideous genetic experiments have disturbed the peace of Animalario, a city at the edge of chaos. Gatto, a skilled detective, hasn’t ceased in his quest to stop Ego and restore order but this time, a lethal hyena will do her utmost to stand in his way.

• The Back Tenant

A house for rent. A woman interested. A landlord not interested in her as his tenant. She challenges him and demands to know why she’s not qualified. His response surprises her.

• Beyond the Black Rainbow

Set in the strange and oppressive emotional landscape of the year 1983, Beyond The Black Rainbow is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons.
