Singer Dev Negi talks to Bhavi Gathani about his latest song Rangtaari from LoveYatri, and his upcoming projects
Dev Negi stepped into the limelight after he lent his voice to the title track of the film Badrinath Ki Dulhania. He made his debut with the song Aaja ab jee le zara from the film Ankur Arora Murder Case, and since then, he has sung more than 20 songs.
Negi’s latest song Rangtaari from the film LoveYatri released at the beginning of this month. Talking about the journey of the song, he says, “Azeem Dayani was the supervisor of the music for this particular film. He is a very good friend of mine and we have worked together before. Be it Badri ki dulhania or Sweety tera drama, Azeem, Tanishk (Bagchi) and I have worked together. People seem to like this energetic song made by Tanishk, and also, Aayush (Sharma), has performed very energetically in the song.”
Talking about the comfort level he shares with Bagchi, the singer says, “Tanishk and I are friends. So while working, things are very comfortable between us. If there is something right or wrong in the song or if there is a suggestion, then we discuss it quite openly and without any hesitation.”
The singer prefers peppy songs to romantic numbers. “When I initially started out in the industry, the songs I got for the films Gabbar Is Back, Tanu Weds Manu or Hero… those were romantic songs. But the reach of those songs was not sufficient. It’s not like people didn’t love those songs. Though people liked those songs, they were not chartbusters.”
Negi considers Badri ki dulhania the turning point in his life. “Through Badri, I was a hit. People recognised me; they realised that this singer sings good songs. There are few people who know what kind of songs Dev can sing. Those composers still make me sing such songs. Those who don’t know about these songs, they listen to Badri ki dulhania, Tan tana tan, Sweety tera drama or Butterfly and decide that peppy songs are my forte.”
Speaking about how he approaches his songs, Negi reveals, “I always try to find out the purpose of the song, the script of the film, and the hero that I am singing for. That helps me mould my voice according to the song. You can sing a song in many different ways, but if you know the story a little, you can get the right approach to sing the song.”
Hinting at his upcoming track from the film Badhaai Ho, Negi says, “I have sung this song for JAM8, which is Pritamda’s company, and whose composers are Akash-Guddu-Kaushik. It is a dance number where the protagonists are teasing each other. Despite being an upbeat track, it is very romantic.”
