Amit Sharma reveals why Ajay Devgn is the perfect choice to play football coach Syed Abdul Rahim in Maidaan

Maidaan, Ajay Devgn’s next film, went on floors yesterday. He took to his social media to announce the news. 

The film is based on the life of a football coach with whose guidance the team reached the semi-finals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Football tournament making. He also led the team to win the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962.

Devgn will be seen essaying the role of the coach in the film that traces the golden era of Indian football from 1952 to 1962. Talking about casting Devgn, director Amit Sharma said to a leading daily, "We are telling a story of an honest man who was an underdog and took football to the next level. That is the kind of journey that Ajay sir has gone through. Also, he is one actor who can show a variety of emotions purely with his eyes. This role demanded that."

Shedding some light on his process of research and prep for the film, the Badhaai Ho director said, "We met some players, including Tulsidas Balaram and Fortunato Franco from the team who coached under him. We gathered enough material from them."

Maidaan also stars Keerthy Suresh and Gajraj Rao. It is produced by Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla and Arunava Joy Sengupta, screenplay and dialogues are written by Saiwyn Quadros and Ritesh Shah respectively. The film is presented by Zee Studios and Kapoor.
