Aparna Sen to reprise Satyajit Ray's Ghare Baire with Ei Juger Ghawre Bairey

Three years after the release of her last Bengali film, Arshinagar, Aparna Sen is back with Ei Juger Ghawre Bairey. As the name suggests, the film will be based on Rabindranath Tagore’s 1916 novel, Ghare Baire and will be a modern take on it. Satyajit Ray had adapted the novel into a film in 1984. It revolved around a complex love triangle among the three protagonists. Set in 1907, Nikhilesh is a rich Bengali zamindar. He lives with his wife, Bimala. Their lives take a drastic turn when Sandip, his friend and a radical nationalist appears. Bimala gets attracted to Sandip, a passionate man who is in completely contrast to her peace-loving husband.

Ei Juger Ghawre Bairey will see Anirban Bhattacharya, Jisshu Sengupta and Tuhina Das reprising the characters of Nikhilesh, Sandip and Bimala. Sreenanda Shankar will essay a pivotal role in the romantic drama. Bimala’s name has been changed to Brinda in the modern adaptation. To be set amidst the current political fabric, it will centre on their love triangle amidst the current political fabric. Bhattacharya will play the editor of an online news website with a progressive outlook. Das will essay the role of a young Dalit girl. Sengupta will play a Leftist student in his 20s and a nationalist leader in his 40s.

In her words, Sen conceived the notion of the film following the assassination of journalist Gauri Lankesh last year. The film is set to go on floors on September 21 and will be shot in Kolkata and Bolpur among other places. It will be cinematographed by Soumik Haldar. Mahendra Soni and Shrikant Mohta will produce the romantic-drama under the banner of Shree Venkatesh Films.
