The Berlin International Film Festival, also known as the Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin, was founded in West Berlin in 1951 at the beginning of the Cold War. Every year, more than 20,000 industry delegates and representatives of the press from over 125 countries are accredited for the festival and the European Film Market.
The 69th edition of the festival will be juried by Academy Award-winning French actress Juliette Binoche. This edition will see the ‘Retrospective’ section that will focus on the films directed by women filmmakers between 1968 and 1999.
OPENING FILM
The Kindness of Strangers
Lone Scherfig’s The Kindness of Strangers is a drama set in a Russian restaurant in New York City. It details the journey of a bunch of people who are going through rough patches in their lives and end up finding laughter and kindness in each other. The contemporary drama features Zoe Kazan, Tahar Rahim, Andrea Riseborough and Caleb Landry Jones, with Jay Baruchel and Bill Nighy in lead roles.

GOLDEN BEAR
British film and stage actress Charlotte Rampling, who has appeared in more than 100 film and television shows, will be conferred the prestigious Golden Bear Award for her outstanding contribution to the field of entertainment. The film festival will also dedicate the ‘Homage’ section to her films. She has been a guest at the festival several times. In 2006, she was president of the International Jury for the 56th Berlinale and in 2015, she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for 45 Years.
EUROPEAN FILM MARKET
The European Film Market is a film trade fair that is held simultaneously with the Berlinale. It is a major industry meeting that serves distributors, film buyers, producers, financiers and co-production agents. It is a known marketplace for trading film and audiovisual content. With time, it has positioned itself as a platform for innovation and change.
CO-PRODUCTION MARKET
The Berlinale Co-Production Market is a four-day event for international producers, sales agents, distributors, broadcasting and funding representatives who a part of international co-productions. Berlin is closing in on gender parity for this edition’s co-production market that will include 22 feature film projects.
