What’s It All About?
In its 66th year, the Berlinale International Film Festival (BIFF) has become one of the most important cultural events for the international film industry. With more than 20,000 professional visitors from 128 countries, the festival hosts around 400 films per year, mostly international or European premieres.
The program features films from every genre, length and format which are divided into various sections such as Competition (International), Panorama (Independent and Art House), Generation (films for young audiences), Perspektive Deutsches (Promising Talents from the German film scene), Forum and Forum Expanded (Experimental and Unfamiliar Cinematography) and Berlinale Shorts.
The program also includes categories such as Retrospective and Homage. Homage focuses on the great personalities of cinema and is curated by the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen. From 2013, the Retrospective has also been expanded to include presentations of Berlinale Classics which showcase current restorations of film classics as well as rediscovered films.
BIFF also features Berlinale Special including Berlinale Special Gala showcasing new and extraordinary productions and honours great cinema personalities. Last year, the fest also included a category titled Berlinale Special Series presenting selected international series.
Indian Connect
An Indian film Sairat by Nagraj Manjule has been selected in the Generation 14Plus section of the festival. The category features 13 films produced or co-produced in 13 countries. Sairat is a story of impossible love that breaks away from the narrow-mindedness of society. The film is said to present powerful imagery and epic scope by Manjule.

Opening Film
Hail, Caesar!
Directed by Academy Award-winning director-duo Joel and Ethan Coen, the film takes place during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, during the studio system’s heyday. The film features Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum. The comedy musical drama is a story of a Hollywood fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), who works to keep the studio’s stars in line. All hell breaks loose when Mannix is presented with plenty of problems to fix, including a kidnapped movie star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) and a pregnant actress, Esther Williams (Scarlett Johnson).
