Four films released last week, of which only two managed to grab the audience – Stanley Ka Dabba and Ragini MMS. Both were not only applauded, they also made it to the list of successful ventures of the year so far. Though neither film was a money-spinner, they did bring the smile back to the faces of everyone associated with these ventures.
Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted also helped bring the audience back to cinema halls. What worked in the film’s favour was that it was a 3D production. It won’t be surprising if more and more filmmakers venture into 3D horror post the success of Haunted.
Since there will be no biggies till June 3, when Salman Khan returns with his antics in Anees Bazmee’s Ready, the film business is expected to enter a lull till then. Three movies did release this week – Pyaar Ka Panchnama, Kashmakash and 404. Since they cater to multiplex-goers, they ended up cutting into each other’s business.
Back to Ready, the talk of the trade. And since it’s been several weeks since we’ve had a big release, Ready is expected to take a flying start. Fingers crossed!
Two more biggies are making waves in the trade, both of them action-packed entertainment – Ajay Devgn’s Singham and Salman Khan’s Bodyguard. Since it will be a while before either releases, the film making waves is Karan Johar’s remake of Agneepath, toplining Hrithik Roshan. Ditto for another action movie releasing towards the end of the year. Yes, expectations are building for Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One. The mega-star’s Don 2 is also considered a hot proposal and is expected to close out 2011 on a happy note.
Two biggies made their debut to TradeTrac last week and they both have one thing in common – Amitabh Bachchan. After a hiatus, Sr Bachchan will be seen as an angry young man in the aptly titled Bbuddah...Hoga Terra Baap.
Prakash Jha is back but minus his lucky mascot, Ajay Devgn. But his next film, Aarakshan, is still one of the hottest properties going. Working in the film’s favour is the long weekend and a national holiday (August 15) since the film will release on August 12. Only one hiccup here – the film is releasing during Ramzan. The promotions are underway in full swing and the buzz is growing.
PS: Like last week, this week too we intended to include Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara being produced by Excel Entertainment but we couldn’t because no one we spoke to in the trade was aware of the film and were thus not willing to comment.
