Sex and sexuality are still not a very common theme for mainstream Hindi films. But films like Vicky Donor, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Badhaai Ho have become trendsetters of sorts. Ayushmann Khurrana has been highly praised for making sex a dinner table conversation. Early this year, Sonam K Ahuja joined the bandwagon with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, a film revolving on a lesbian relationship.
The latest to join the league is Sonakshi Sinha. Her upcoming film, Khandaani Shafakhana, deals with the taboo topic of sex and a girl inheriting a sex clinic that once belonged to her maternal uncle. Laced with humour, the film tries to question equality and the pre-conceived notion that women cannot run a sex clinic.
In an exclusive chat with team Box Office India, Sonakshi talked at length about the themes the film deals with and her thoughts on it. She said, “Anything that you portray or project through humour is always better received. What is entertainment? It is about showing a mirror to the society. In the film, we’re talking about a lot of different topics that need to be addressed right now; one of them is sex. Why is sex a taboo? We all are born because of it. Another topic is equality. When a man is a gynaecologist, nobody raises an eyebrow. But when a girl wants to run a sex clinic, her own brother is saying to her, ‘Ladki hoke woh waali clinic jaayegi?’ Why can’t a girl run a sex clinic?”
Well, the Sinha girl has surely asked a relevant question for us to ponder on.
On a related note, to make it appeal to a wider audience, the makers of Khandaani Shafakhana are marketing it as ‘The only sex film for the whole family!’ We hope that this film becomes an interesting and impactful addition to the slew of light-hearted and yet thought-provoking films.
Khandaani Shafakhana also stars Varun Sharma and Badshah and is directed by Shilpi Dasgupta. The Sundial venture is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Mahaveer Jain, Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, Divya Khosla Kumar and Krishan Kumar. It is presented by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and is slated to hit the screens on August 2, 2019.
