We know that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is quite a taskmaster. We have heard anecdotes of several stars getting intimidated by the filmmaker’s aura. But Meezaan who is marking his debut with Malaal confided in us that he fell sick after a visit to the sets of Bajirao Mastani. Yes, you heard that right. Before you start raising your eyebrows, let us shed some light on the incident.
Meezaan ended up on the set of the magnum opus in a rather serendipitous fashion. So what happened next? “Sharmin invited me to the set of Bajirao Mastani because she needed help, someone to try on the costumes, as Ranveer Singh was not available on that day. They just wanted to see what the costumes looked like on someone. I came, I tried the costumes, and met Sanjay sir for the first time and I was actually very scared as well as nervous. But I met him and for some reason he saw something in me. He told me that I am a star and I should act. After that I visited him on the sets of Bajirao Mastani as well, just to observe and learn. But I fell very ill after that,” the young actor said.
SLB’s sets are known for their opulence and grandeur but there goes a whole lot of hard work to create the magic that we get to see on the big screen. Meezaan added, “You get used to it. But if you are there just for a day, there is a lot of haze on the sets, there is a lot of sawdust - that is what the period of the film was.”
Well, what happened next is history! From falling ill to standing in the side and coming before the camera, Meezaan has had quite a journey.
Malaal is presented by Gulshan Kumar and Bhansali. It is produced by Bhansali, Bhushan Kumar, Mahaveer Jain and Krishan Kumar. The film, co-starring Sharmin Segal, is slated for a July 5, 2019 release.
