WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The 71st Festival de Cannes will be held from May 8 to 19, 2018. In order to achieve this level of longevity, the festival has remained faithful to its founding purpose: to draw attention to and raise the profile of films, with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, boosting the film industry worldwide and celebrating cinema at an international level.
Over the years, it has evolved, while seeking to preserve its core values. These are: a passion for cinema, the discovery of new talents, and the bringing together of professionals and journalists from around the world with the aim of contributing to the creation and distribution of films.
Indian Connect
Sir
Directed by Rohena Gera, the film talks about a domestic help, Ratna who falls in love with Ashwin, the son of her upper-class employers. It is a love story set against the backdrop of the economic class divide. The movie will compete with other films in the Cannes Critics’ Week, the sidebar event at the annual Cannes Film Festival. The film features Tillotama Shome, Geetanjali Kulkarni and Rahul Vora in lead roles.
Manto
Directed by Nandita Das, the film is based on the life of Indo-Pakistani author, writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Manto was known for his short stories set during the devastating partition of the Indian subcontinent. These irreverent, unflinching but deeply humane stories earned him the wrath of the colonial British government and later of independent Pakistan. The stories were deemed obscene by the courts and he spent his last years fighting legal battles to defend his right to write.
Opening Night
Everybody Knows
Directed by Asghar Farhadi, the film follows the journey of Laura, who travels with her family from Buenos Aires to her native village in Spain for a celebration. An unexpected event changes the characters’ lives. The family, its ties and the moral choices imposed on them lie at the heart of the plot.
