Clinton Cerejo is excited about his first solo album as a music composer with Jugni, featuring renowned musicians like AR Rahman, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Javed Bashir.
Ever since he started his career as a playback singer, Clinton Cerejo has worn many hats, ranging from a vocalist to music producer to composer. Now, for the first time, Cerejo has composed an entire album for the upcoming musical drama Jugni. The soundtrack features singers of the caliber of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Vishal Bhardwaj, Javed Bashir, Nakash Aziz and Neha Kakkar, among others. On his first solo project, Cerejo says, “I always wanted to compose but I was waiting for a project that would offer me creative freedom. When it comes to creating music, I love to experiment and I got that opportunity with Jugni. Director Shefali (Bhushan) trusted me and gave me all the freedom I needed and the singers in the film are the best in the business.”
The album is said to have a rustic folk flavour since the film is set in Punjab. “There are different songs reflecting different emotions. I have played with Sufi elements by adding some pop culture reference. AR Rahman has also composed a song for the film. It is a prayer song written by Kashif of Khwaja mere khwaja fame,” he adds.
Cerejo says it has always been his personal mission to stay current and connected to the changing music scenario and collaborations have helped him get a different perspective. “I guess adaptability has always been inherent in my musical approach. I have always believed that a good melody will transcend time and genre-specific boundaries. That has always been the goal – to create something that will last. Also, the beauty of collaboration is that it brings out something fresh and new out of the conventional and this can be only done with inputs from different people,” he says.
The musician has not only created a name in Bollywood but is also popular in the independent music space. Cerejo recently formed his own indie-band Ananthaal and has released an album with the same name. The album has received the title of iTunes Best Indie Pop Album 2015 on the annual music charts of iTunes.
