Happy birthday Karthi: Four memorable performances of the talented actor

Karthi comes from a lineage that could add pressure on any newcomer. Anyone with Sivakumar for a father and Suriya for a brother would have thought twice before becoming an actor. But not Karthi. He not only took the plunge but also for his first film chose an unconventional Paruthiveeran. After that, he had to wait for nearly three years for his second film, Aayirathil Oruvan to release. It was a difficult time for the young actor, but he persevered and today is a popular name in Kollywood.

On his birthday today, we pick four memorable performances from his interesting and ever growing repertoire of movies

Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru

The role of an honest and upright cop, won the actor critical acclaim as well commercial success. He brought gravitas to his character of DSP Theeran Thirumaran. The H Vinoth directorial was based on real life incidents, and one of Karthi best performances.

Karthi shared screen space with Nagarjuna in this Tamil-Telugu bilingual. The chemistry between the two actors was the highlight of the film. Karthi played the role of Seenu with sincerity. He made you laugh and he made you cry. Karthi has successfully managed to infuse humour and drama into his roles, and Thozha was one of them.

This is probably Karthi’s most successful films. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film was a political drama. As Kaali, Karthi transformed from a carefree young man into a responsible crusader for society. The film was not only a box office success, but also it won several awards.

Naan Mahaan Alla

The Suseenthiran directed action thriller, gave Karthi to explore several emotional layers. He is the devoted son, the crazy lover and a man on a mission as well. He traversed through all the ups and downs of his character Jeeva with ease and perfection. Karthi made you a part his journey, and you root for him throughout the film.

His other memorable roles include Maniratnam’s Kaatru Veliyidai, Siruthai, Aayirathil Oruvan and of course his debut film Paruthiveeran.

His upcoming films include Kaithi, teaser of which will be out on May 30 and a film that he is doing with his sister-in-law Jyotika. This is the first time that they are sharing screen space.
