August 10-22, 2018
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne was founded in 2010 and was called ‘Bollywood & Beyond’. It was re-established in 2012 as an initiative of the Victorian government to improve and strengthen cultural bonds between the Indian film industry and Victoria. It is touted as the southern hemisphere’s biggest annual Indian film festival.
The festival encompasses events like a Q&A, where the audience gets to interact with some of the biggest actors, writers and directors of the Hindi film industry, and an array of master classes and panel discussions with industry stalwarts on emerging trends in the industry. The film fest is produced by Mind Blowing Films, a Melbourne-based distributor of Indian cinema.
The current edition, based on the theme of inclusion, will witness live interactions with actors like Simi Grewal, Rani Mukerji, Vicky Kaushal, Ram Charan, Freida Pinto and Ali Fazal. Vidya Balan is the brand ambassador of the festival.
Based on a true story, this Tabrez Noorani directorial venture revolves around an Indian village girl called Sonia. It traces her journey of trying to extricate herself from the global flesh trade while trying to rescue her sister, Preeti. The film stars Mrunal Thakur, Demi Moore, Freida Pinto, Richa Chadha, Manoj Bajpayee, Adil Hussain and Rajkummar Rao.
Rohena Gera’s debut feature is based on the themes of class divide and women’s independence. It portrays the story of a wealthy man Ashwin and his servant named Ratna who fall in love against societal norms. The film features Tillotama Shome, Rahul Vohra, Geetanjali Kulkarni and Vivek Gomber.
