Last week’s release Jazbaa is gaining appreciation for its power-packed performances. Apart from the film being Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback vehicle and an impactful performance from Irrfan, the other actor like Chandan Roy Sanyal has moved the audience with his soulful acts.
The response has been outstanding, something I have not received in years. People have started hating me, which means they have accepted me in my character.
On bagging Jazbaa
I got a call from our casting director Honey Trehan, who told me he had a role for me which I should not miss. Honey had also got me Kaminey, and I still receive compliments for that role. So I didn’t think twice before meeting Sanjay Gupta for the film. He narrated the script to me, and I immediately said yes to the film.
On working with Irrfan and Aishwarya
While signing the film, I was aware that it had great curiosity value as it was an Aishwarya Rai Bachchan film after a long time. That was one reason I chose to do the film. When you work in a film with a big star cast, you know it will have a wide reach and you too will reach out to a large number of people. The film also features Irrfan, one of the best actors in our industry.
On the film
This film didn’t demand any research. I followed my director’s vision and was told to follow the brief I had been given. Sanjay is a very real filmmaker and a sound technician too. Although the film was about an emotional journey, my character demanded me to be emotionless. I had to practice being that way to get into my character. But it was not tough at all because Sanjay had arranged script reading sessions with the entire star cast. That made things easier and we got to know our co-stars. I have a theatre background and practicing is very important for me.
On Sanjay Gupta
Sanjay knew of me but only through other people. He is good friends with Sujoy Ghosh and I was to do Kahaani (cop’s character) but had to turn it down due to date issues. When I met him, he said he had heard a lot about me from Sujoy. That made things easier for us and we bonded very well while shooting.
Although Kaminey was the film that got the industry to take notice of me, I started receiving offers only after Jazbaa. I hope Jazbaa turns out to be another turning point in my career.
