Just when National Award winner Rahul Dholakia was getting used to being turned down, it’s a “yes!”
After the director announced his project Society, he had a string of actors saying “no thanks” to various roles in his film. Society was to feature Naseeruddin Shah, who was to play a 60-year-old virgin. Don’t know what went wrong but we hear that Javed Jaffrey has just been signed on instead of Shah.
A source from the unit tells us that Shah had earlier confirmed his participation as both he and Dholakia had worked together in Parzania. But it seems the veteran actor gave the project the thumbs-down. Dholakia’s second choice was Irrfan Khan but he too refused the role Shah was to play.
Interestingly, the heroine of the film, Reema Sen too was not Dholakia’s first choice. The director wanted to cast Neha Dhupia but she walked out on him as she felt there wasn’t enough scope for her character. Following in Dhupia’s footsteps were two more actors – Urvashi Sharma and Neetu Chandra.
Dholakia didn’t want to divulge details about the project but he did clarify that Jaffrey would not be cast as an old man. “It’s a very different role which Javed is doing. I don’t want to disclose his character. I had sat with Naseer for this role but couldn’t finalise him,” says the director.
