Sometimes, it is the power of a strong supporting cast that makes a film look as good as it does on the big screen. Ashish Verma, who has taken his role to the next level with his incredible acting in Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, talks to Bhavi Gathani about his role and much more.
On The Brief
There was no brief as the script was quite self-explanatory. The only brief given to us was to keep it as natural as possible. Keep it as truthful, as honest, as real as you can be.
On The Role
As part of the preparation, the three of us used to hang out a lot together, we used to watch films together and we really got along. It was very important for the chemistry of the three friends to come out very well because they were supposed to come off as a unit and at the same time represent three different things. Plus there were two time zones in the film. One was 2011, and in between there was a gap of five years, so there were subtle changes during this time, like minor changes in body language. Plus there were scuba diving classes that I had to attend along with Harshvardhan (Kapoor). The scene was physically as well as emotionally draining in the film.
On The Director
With (Vikramaditya) Motwane sir, it took me a while to get what was happening. But after the fourth schedule, it became super nice. A major chunk of the shoot with all three of us started in the second schedule. Sir (Motwane) had a different way of making us work. He used to say that this is the scene, now you understand it and tell me how you will do it. Sometimes, when we felt that the scene was not going in the direction we wanted it to, he used to guide us that aise kar and then we used to do it accordingly.
On The Co-Stars
Working with Harshvardhan and Priyanshu (Painyuli) was super awesome. All of us are chilled-out guys and everyone is very sensible and a sensitive actor. You understand their parts in the film. Everyone played their role with complete honesty. Kabhi aisa nahi tha ki koi actor dusre ko overpower kar raha hai. Everyone worked together as a team. There was healthy give-and-take.
On The Response
From the industry, the response was very overwhelming. During the screening of the movie, Javed Akhtar sir complimented me saying, bahut sundar kaam kiya hai. Boney Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Sonam Kapoor tweeted. The reviewers also gave us a very good response. In fact, it was much better than I had expected.
There is a film called Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai for which I was shooting alongside Bhavesh Joshi. There were so many times when I was doing Bhavesh Joshi in the morning and Aapkey Kamrey Mein at night. Rajat’s character was very rooted and calm but utna hi idiot and extrovert and pagal mera dusra character tha. And besides that, that there is also a British film that I did titled Imperial Blue. It’s a very cool film and an international project I am very proud of.
