What’s It All About?

This is the 69th year of the Locarno International Film Festival (Festival del film Locarno), annually held across 11 days in the city of Locarno, Switzerland. The most eye-catching feature of this festival is the Grande Piazza, with a capacity of 8,000 spectators and one big screen.

The festival is known for exploring cinema from every perspective. In addition to featuring 16 titles in the Piazza Grande section, 15 in the International Competition and another 15 in the Filmmakers of the Present section, the event will also honour a range of talent.

Bill Pullman will visit the festival this year to receive the Excellence Award Moet & Chandon, while the Visions Award will go to The Lord Of The Rings composer Howard Shore. Locarno will also host tributes to filmmakers Alejandro Jodorwsky; Jonas Mekas; Roger Corman; the late Abbas Kiarostami; Jane Birkin, the British actress, singer and muse known for roles in films by Michelangelo Antonioni; Jean-Luc Godard; and Agnes Varda, among others.

The Girl With All The Gifts

Directed by Colm McCarthy, The Girl With All The Gifts is an adaptation of MR Carey’s acclaimed novel. It’s about a scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embarking on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie. The film features Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine.

Mohenjo Daro

Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo-Daro is a film set in the prehistoric Indus Valley and is about a young indigo farmer, Sarman (Hrithik), who comes to Mohenjo Daro and uncovers secrets of the city and his own past which nobody is supposed to know. Chaani (Pooja Hegde), daughter of a priest, plays his love interest.
