A lukewarm May 2019 for the box office

Let us look at the box office status of the Hindi films released over the past decade in the month of May. As we can see in the table below, the number of films that have been releasing in the month of May have been increasing almost every year but the box office performance of the collective total of these films have been fluctuating, especially in the last seven years.

In the year 2013, during the month of May, the box office business of all the films released was Rs 310.19 crore and in the very next year, in 2014, the business dropped down to Rs 91.83 crore. Again in following year, the business rose to Rs 341.16 crore and dropped down to 91.27 crore in the next (2016). In the year 2019, the films collectively garnered Rs 200.28 crore in May. However, if we look at the average amount earned per film, this year's May was quite thanda when compared to past three years. The average per film this year came to Rs 9.53 crore, which is approximately 24 per cent and 27 per cent lower than 2017 (Rs 12.60 crore) and 2018 (Rs 13.08 crore).

It must be noted that there was only one film released in May 2009, reason being the dispute between the distributors and multiplex owners. The multiplexes went on strike for more than two months at that time.
